Internships

Al-Marsad's Internship Programme provides an opportunity for individuals (international law specialists, lawyers, human rights defenders) to gain practical experience by working on the field with an international human rights organisation. Al-Marsad chooses applicants who will benefit most from the experience, as well as those who can contribute most to the organisation based on their skills and interests and Al-Marsad's current needs.

Al-Marsad principally recruits Interns to work in its Legal Research and Advocacy Department, but considers also Internship applications from individuals seeking work in Monitoring and Documentation, or Media and Administration.

Duties

Intern duties in Al-Marsad's Legal Research and Advocacy department include: researching legal and factual issues; drafting various releases; assisting in international advocacy activities; trips to the field; and administrative tasks. Interns should expect a combination of challenging and routine tasks.

Duration and Compensation

Internships are full-time, run for a period to three to six months, and are voluntary (unpaid). Interns receive accommodation and reimbursement of local work-related travel expenses. Aside from this, Interns must arrange their own funding for all costs associated with their internship. Prospective Interns must make sure—before accepting an internship with Al-Marsad—that they have sufficient funding for the entire period of their internship.

Essential requirements

Undergraduate degree - those with undergraduate degree in law will be given first preference. However, applicants with a degree in international relations, political science, Middle Eastern studies, or another relevant field may be considered for our Monitoring and Documentation or Media and Administration departments.

Familiarity with the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Fluent in written and spoken English. The working languages of Al-Marsad are Arabic and English. Knowledge of Arabic is helpful, but not required. Other language skills are a plus (e.g., French, Spanish, German).

Computer literacy, including familiarity with word-processing programmes.

Highly desirable requirements

Postgraduate degree - preferably in law / international law. Prospective applicants with postgraduate degrees in international relations, political science, Middle Eastern studies, or similar fields will be considered for our Monitoring and Documentation or Media and Administration departments.

All previous Al-Marsad Interns who worked in our Legal Research and Advocacy department possessed postgraduate degrees in law (e.g., J.D., LL.M.), and had substantial knowledge of international human rights law, humanitarian law and/or international criminal law.

Applicants must submit, in four separate attachments: (i) a cover letter; (ii) a current CV; (iii) an unedited writing sample; and (iv) two referees. The referees should be the names and contact details of persons who have known you in a professional capacity.

Please indicate the dates of your envisaged internship. It is recommended you submit an application at least three months before the suggested starting date of the internship. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted. Al-Marsad endeavours to inform all candidates of its decision with regard to their application at last two months prior to the requested starting date of the Internship.

Notes

• Visa: Interns are responsible for obtaining and financing necessary visas. For some individuals gaining access to Israel may prove to be difficult. Please note that Al-Marsad cannot facilitate your entry
• Travel: Interns arrange and finance their travel to the Golan
• Medical insurance: Interns bear responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the course of their Internship, and must show proof of a valid medical insurance coverage prior to commencing their internship
